Randy Barker & Walkies Dog Training
My first dog was a Border Collie, from a family members’ female dog who had got out and been mated! This was my first challenge and where I started. Lloyd (featured with snowman age 16 years) was an entire male and a strong character. I sought help to train him, fortunately finding a reward based training establishment. Lets say I got the bug and this is how my career with dogs began. My second dog, a Labrador called Pickle, a stud dog for Guide Dogs was again an experience of owning an entire male dog and that came with some challenges too. My current pooch Ripley is a Terrier Cross from the Dogs Trust. Having been a stray, in and out of homes, he is now settled living harmoniously with the rest of the Ark, including Sid (cat) and Hide ‘n’ Seek (hens). Do not be disillusioned this took some time!
From 1991 to the present I have attended numerous dog behaviour courses (approx 22). My career with Guide Dogs for the Blind Association also started in 1991 gaining City & Guilds qualifications in dog breeding, whelping, weaning and puppy care, including kennel welfare and care. I then progressed to becoming a qualified Guide Dog Trainer which I have done for a total of 10 years. This is my current vocation.
For 3 years I was an Instructor for Dogs for the Disabled, where I trained dogs to assist clients with a variety of needs.
For 2 years I ran my own business in canine services.. At Walkies I also provide one-to-one training consultations for owners of dogs with challenging behaviour, rescue dogs or simply the cute puppy that has become too big for its paws!
In my opinion, dog training is no science really and the majority of training is people based to help increase pet owners understanding of their dogs. My aim is to help owners to help their beloved pets, and to prevent those inappropriate and problem behaviours becoming an established problem!
